THE protracted return to service of No. 56049 moved on a stage on August 6 with a 0Z56/09.30 test run from Nottingham Eastcroft to Crewe and back. To provide a load, No. 56096 was in tow along with Boden Rail’s Nos. 50017 and 50050, although the resurrected Type 5 was not seen out again during the month.

Another Colas convoy was noted very late on September 2 when Nos. 56078 and 56090 sandwiched a disabled No. 56105 away from Peak Forest. The latter ‘Grid’ had suffered traction motor damage while undertaking ‘super shunter’ duties, leaving it unable to move by rail without a wheelskate.
