Class 314 withdrawals begin
SEPTEMBER saw ScotRail withdraw the first of its 16 Class 314 EMUs from traffic.
Three sets, Nos. 314207/212/213, were taken out of service following a reduction in the number of booked weekday diagrams for the units from 14 to 11. This has been made possible due to a blockade at Ayr station, which has had to be partially closed owing to the condition of the adjacent Station Hotel, which has resulted in an exclusion zone being imposed. Services to Ayr are now limited to four cars. This has released some Class 380 units to cover three diagrams previously operated by ‘314s’.
All three units now out of use were moved to Yoker for storage on September 22. Nos. 314207/213 ran as the 5Z51/19.30 Corkerhill-Yoker, with No. 314212 following later that evening as the 5Z52/23.25 Corkerhill-Yoker. Under the original franchise plans, by the end of the year just three sets should be in service, but delays in the introduction of the Class 385 fleet could see more retained until 2019.
