WINGS OF GOLD

Having never ridden a Gold Wing before, or anything quite that size, I half expected I would be captaining a 20,000 tonne vessel down to Slovenia for the 35th anniversary for the Gold Wing European Federation. As soon as I threw a leg over the bike I was relieved to find that the 2018 Honda GL1800 Gold Wing had been redesigned from the ground up. The bike hides its weight amazingly. Apparently it’s 48kg lighter than the last model and feels nicely compact as you sit on it. Activate the keyless ignition and you are greeted with the impressive 7in TFT display.

In preparation for the long ride I threw all my kit into the panniers and top box. The bike boasts a whopping 110 litres of carrying space – it was a nice change not to have to use any bungees or tie downs that
