SWEETCORN

SOW: Apr-May

HARVEST: Jul-Oct

If you’ve not tried growing sweetcorn before, these tall plants might look a daunting prospect but you’ll be pleasantly surprised just how easy they are to grow and how sweet the rewards.

SOWING

You can sow sweetcorn in May directly into the soil but I prefer to start them off in cells under cover in mid-April. To develop a robust root system, sow them in toilet roll tubes or Rootrainers filled with multi-purpose compost. They will need a temperature of 18-21C (65-70F) for best germination, which usually takes about 10-14 days. Push the seeds down to about 2.5cm (1in), cover with compost and water
