MEET THE GOLDEN BAGGERS

London. And not just any London, but serious London, City of London, EC2 postcode. I had heard a rumour that a group of people, keen to grow, had taken over an area of space between high-rise flats on Golden Lane estate and put one-tonne builders’ bags, the type used for quantities of sand or gravel, filled them with soil and had started to grow fruit and vegetables in them. Hence the name, the Golden Baggers. I was here to track them down.

I surface at the Barbican tube, and it’s a warm June day, with the heat trapped in by the concrete, the tower blocks and walkways of the Brutalist 1960s architectural style, and I’m beginning to think it must be quite difficult to fit in any kind of growing here. It comes as no surprise
