1972 Hurst Olds Pace Car

Since 1911 it has been the tradition to start the annual Indianapolis 500 race with a rolling start, headed by a so-called ‘pace car’. Most automobile races have a standing start, but the rolling start after a couple of laps of the course not only enables the assembled competitors to warm their cars ready for the off, but also allows the marshals time to ensure it is safe to commence the race.
