Note: Jo used the Half-Square Triangle and Quarter-Square Triangle ruler set from Westalee Rulers to make the blocks for her quilt. However, the following instructions are for cutting fabric with a standard quilter’s ruler.
Centre block
From each of the white tone-on-tone print fabric and the orange batik, cut:
❖ two squares, 4in (HSTs)
❖ two squares, 4½in (Hourglass units)
From the light teal batik, cut:
❖ one square, 3½in
1 Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of both white 4in squares. Match each, right sides together, with the orange 4in squares. Sew a scant ¼in on either side of the line, cut the fabric on the line and press the seams towards the orange fabric. You will have made four half-square triangle (HST) units.
2 Trim these HSTs to measure 3½in square with the seam line on the diagonal from corner to corner. See Diagram 1.
Repeat Step 1 with the white and orange 4½in squares to make another four, slightly larger, HSTs. On the wrong side
