timely tips for 10 TOP CROPS

1 BEANS

Your bean plants will be racing up their tepees, their flowers turning to succulent beans without too much effort on your part. (More on beans page 42.)

• Sow seeds or plant seedlings every few weeks to ensure continuous cropping.

• Make sure there’s good airflow between plants, especially in humid climates.

• Increase watering in hot conditions but try to water base of plants only, to avoid fungal diseases. Don’t over-water.

• As beans can take nitrogen from the atmosphere, don’t over-feed but apply a high-potash fertiliser.

2 SWEET CORN

Sweet corn takes up a little space as it needs to be planted in blocks to assist with wind pollination. It’s worth it, though, if you have the space.
