For a creator of supercars known as much for aesthetics as performance, it seems surprising that, for most of its 69-year history, Ferrari had no in-house design team. Most of its sensuously curved automobiles and track-ready beasts are the work of coachbuilders, the most legendary being Pininfarina.
By 2010, however, the processes of design and engineering had become too complex and interdependent to remain separate.
