Helsinki is that perfect thing, a small city easily explored on foot, where great design permeates almost every aspect of daily life.
At first glance it’s a conventionally pretty European town sitting on a peninsula in the island-strewn Gulf of Finland. The handsome, high-set Lutheran cathedral and brooding Russian church overlook the city’s broad esplanade and market square where tiny stalls sell fur jackets, salmon soup and reindeer meatballs.
