    Chicago cop's checkered career should have been red flag for city, lawyer for beating victim says

    CHICAGO - A Chicago police sergeant emboldened by a long history of escaping discipline from the Police Department "acted with impunity" the night he attacked and severely beat two men outside an Andersonville neighborhood nightclub, a lawyer for the victims alleged Thursday.

    At a news conference Thursday at his Loop law office, attorney Timothy Cavanagh said Sgt. Eric Elkins' checkered police career - including nearly three dozen citizen complaints and twice being charged with sex crimes involving teenage boys - should have been a red flag for the city.
