David Haugh: Cubs can end the noise around Joe Maddon with a contract extension by October

For reasons difficult to comprehend, Joe Maddon's job security continues to create conversation around Wrigleyville.

The latest buzz came courtesy of USA Today, which cited anonymous baseball executives in speculating that Maddon's "fate is tenuous" if the Cubs falter late.

No word whether those whispering baseball executives, perhaps influenced by wishful thinking, worked for teams likely to fire their own managers and pursue Maddon if he hit the open market. In an interview with WSCR-AM 670, Maddon never has sounded more eloquent or accurate in calling such speculation "dumb." The notion
