The Result In The Pa. Special Election Could Mean Trouble For Republicans

The candidates are separated by just hundreds of votes. That's a big turnaround from President Trump's 20-point victory in 2016. It has many Republicans worried about a possible Democratic wave.

That a Democrat is narrowly ahead in a Western Pennsylvania congressional district special election can mean only one thing — bad news for Republicans in this midterm year.

Conor Lamb leads Republican Rick Saccone by only 641 votes out of about 228,000 cast. That result does not indicate just how big a deal it is that the Democrat is even close in this race.

"We should be able to elect a box of hammers in this district," veteran Republican strategist Mike Murphy told the Washington Post's Robert Costa. "If we're losing here, you can bet there is a Democratic wave coming."
