dax Shepard prefers to be in the driver’s seat. It’s not that the 42-year-old actor is a control freak; that’s just been the one spot in the world where he’s felt the most comfortable. “I’ve been the passenger in a lot of accidents. My dad crashed us a few times. My friends rolled us over,” he says. “So I like to be the one steering.”
This preference has recently Shepard is no longer riding shotgun. Not only has he landed his biggest role in more than a decade with the upcoming action comedy but he wrote and directed the thing, too. The movie, which hits theaters March 24, is a reboot of the ’70s/’80s TV series most famous for putting Erik Estrada in sunglasses and a tight tan uniform, this time starring Shepard and Michael Peña as California highway patrolmen Jon and Ponch.
