Helene Elliott: No clear favorites heading into men's and women's Olympic figure skating

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea - The next chapter of Olympic figure skating history hinges on the state of Yuzuru Hanyu's injured right ankle.

Hanyu became the first Japanese man to win an Olympic figure skating gold medal when he prevailed at Sochi in 2014, and at 19 the youngest male singles skater to become Olympic champion since 18-year-old Dick Button triumphed at St. Moritz, Switzerland, in 1948.

No male singles skater has won the gold medal in two consecutive Winter Games since Button did so in 1948 and 1952, but Hanyu appeared to have an excellent chance at duplicating that
