America Finally Sees Meaningful Wage Growth
The first jobs report of the year beat economists’ expectations, and provided the biggest boost in earnings since 2009.
In January, the U.S. economy added 200,000 jobs while the unemployment rate held steady at 4.1 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number slightly beat analysts’ expectations: Economists surveyed around 177,000. But the biggest story of the month was the uptick in wages, which grew 2.9 percent from the previous year—marking the biggest jump in earnings since 2009.
