Alvvays puts its faith in songs rather than window dressing

Alvvays isn't necessarily known as a band with a hard edge, particularly after the success of the sweetly anthemic single "Archie, Marry Me" lifted the Toronto quartet out of obscurity in 2014.

But beneath the dream-pop vocals, singer Molly Rankin is more than capable of delivering a few sly verbal jabs. On "Plimsoll Punks" from the band's latest album, "Antisocialites" (Polyvinyl), she takes a few humorous shots at judgmental would-be punks who think her band's soft.
