President Trump May Declare Opioid Epidemic National Emergency

The move could free up resources for treatment and to better monitor prescriptions.

President Trump could declare a national emergency to deal with the opioid epidemic Thursday, freeing up resources for treatment and to better monitor prescriptions. More than 140 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The president first said he'd declare the opioid crisis a national emergency in August, but the proposal languished until this week.
