Twitter suspends account of Iran’s Khamenei

Social networking site Twitter has suspended the Arabic language account of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Mehr news agency reported.

This is not the first time the leader’s Twitter account has been suspended. The social account has also previously been targeted by hackers.

The leader’s English, French and Spanish Twitter accounts have not been affected.

Twitter has not yet provided any response on the reasons behind the suspension; however a new account has been set up to replace the old one.

This comes weeks before Iranians head to the polls to choose their next president on 19 May. Ahead of the elections, Khamenei has said that “the candidates should promise to focus on national capabilities and domestic capacities to resolve the economic issues … rather than looking abroad.”
