- Conceptual Metaphors as an Organisational Framework of the Specialist Language of IT: An Analysis of Cloud Computing Terminology
Magdalena Krawiec provides insight into the underlying conceptual structure of information technology and gives a plausible account of the patterns of metaphorical conceptualisation manifested in the specialist language of IT. Conceptual metaphors map our concrete experience onto abstract experiences, so as to effortlessly get hold of new emergent concepts. On the one hand, our ability to make our world thinkable rests on the use of our past experiences, whereas on the other hand, IT specialists familiarise themselves with yet unknown conceptual structures through the interaction with the specialist scenery. Specialists' thinkability of the specialist surroundings is grounded in their perception of similarity which enables them to adapt both conceptually and linguistically to their specialist practice.
- Binomials in English/Polish Company Registration Discourse: The Study of Linguistic Profile and Translation Patterns
Edyta Więcławska presents the structural and functional aspects of binomials in English/Polish company registration discourse. She analyses and discusses frequency data from the sociolinguistic perspective. Her work contributes original and innovative research shedding new light on the perennial issue of legal formulacity as evidenced through binomial expressions. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the volume fits within the research domains of linguistics and law (jurlinguistics, legal linguistics), translation studies and commercial law.
- Bi- and Multilingualism from Various Perspectives of Applied Linguistics
This volume comprises 16 chapters – both research papers and theoretical contributions – grouped in three thematic sections. The chapters in the first part, entitled "Discourse Communities: Languages in Contact," adopt a social and/or historical perspective on bi-/multilingualism. The contributions in the second part, entitled "Languages in the Mind: Language Development and Language Use," view issues related to bi- and multilingualism from psycholinguistic and psychological perspectives. The chapters comprising the third part, "Language Education: Supporting Multilingual Development," adopt a broadly understood didactic perspective on bi-/multilingualism.
- Language, Culture, Identity: Between Ethnolinguistics and Ethnomethodology
The contributions gathered in this volume attempt to take varied perspectives on current state of art within the field of linguistics, sociolinguistics and ethnolinguistics. This vast interpretative perspective stretches from the modern European and American conceptualisations of the societal identity, through the extralinguistic reality hidden behind the language expressions and phraseology in order to complete this image with the insightful presentation of various linguistic diasporas. Sociopragmatic and ethnolinguistic considerations accomplish this attempt to represent the leading themes of modern linguistic studies. Diverse methodological and empirical perspectives are employed in the present volume – from socio- and ethnolinguistic issues through (inter)cultural and communication studies to good practices in translatology.
- Didactics of Polish as a Foreign and Second Language against the European Background
This volume starts with an overview of the history of teaching Polish as a foreign language from the beginning of the 16th century to 1939. The authors then present the rapid development of teaching Polish as a foreign language from 1992 to 2015. This is supplemented by information on the methodology of teaching Polish. In the next part they describe the didactics of the Polish language abroad, followed by the introduction of the Polish language policy and the promotion of Polish outside Poland. Then they present the teaching of Polish as a second language and the problems of communication. At the end, information is given about the achievements of European didactics in the field of teaching Polish as a foreign and second language. The volume concludes with a proposal for the creation of a didactics of European languages (including Slavic languages as well).
- Analysing Discourse, Analysing Poland: The Case of a Political Interview
The contributors of the twelve texts collected in this volume follow two paths: Firstly, there is a methodological path related to the discussion of the interdisciplinarity of discourse studies and the potential of qualitative research based on the study of a single case. Secondly, by taking as a case study the political interview by Tomasz Lis, a leading liberal journalist, with Jarosław Kaczyński, chairman of the right-wing Law and Justice party, they delineate possible avenues for an in-depth view of the mechanisms of Poland's highly polarised public debate.
