United States of True Crime is an anthology series devoted to the most disturbing cases in each of the 50 states. This book focuses on ten of the most chilling crimes in Alabama history. True crime junkies may recognize some of the highly publicized cases, but lesser-known, equally unsettling crimes are also included. Cases in this book: Audrey Marie Hilley: Black widow who murdered her husband then attempted to poison her daughter. She evaded capture by posing as her fictional twin sister. Joseph Dewey Akin: Code blue junkie nurse who was convicted of intentionally overdosing a patient in his care and is suspected in the deaths of seventeen former patients. Thomas Whisenhant: Murderer with a pattern of desecrating the bodies of his victims. Scottsboro Boys: One of the most notorious court cases of the 20th century where two white women falsely accused nine Black boys of rape. Gerald Patrick Lewis: Serial killer whose heinous crimes include slaying a woman who was eight months pregnant and removing the fetus from her body.

James Dale Ritchie: Killed in a shootout with police. After his death police connected him to five unsolved homicides. Robert Allen Hale: Frontiersman who physically, mentally, and sexually abused his 15 children for decades in rural Alaska. Steven H. Downs: Accused of the murder of a young woman after DNA evidence was linked to him over 25 years after her death. Israel Keyes: Serial murderer who evaded capture for decades by abducting his victims in one state, murdering them in another, and disposing of them in a third. Although he only ever confessed to three murders, the FBI believes he had at least 11 victims.

Eight were attacked and five perished at the hands of the elusive murderer.  Charles Ray Vines: Serial killer who was a well-liked father while he moonlighted as a monster. He raped four women, murdering two of them. Dorthy Jean Matajke: Nurse who abused, robbed, then fatally poisoned her elderly patients. Ronald Gene Simmons: Brutally murdered fourteen members of his family. He then continued his rampage, executing two more innocent victims and wounding two others.

Jared Loughner: Mass shooter intended to kill a congresswoman and a judge and killed many others in the rampage, including a nine-year-old girl. Robert Spangler: Pushed his third wife into the Grand Canyon. He claimed it was an accident, but more than six years later, he admitted to the murder. He also confessed to murdering his first wife and their two children. Christopher Matthew Clements: Currently awaiting trial for the murder of 6-year-old Isabel Celis and 13-year-old Maribel Gonzales. Isabel’s body was recovered based on a tip provided by Clements and DNA positively connected him to Maribel.
