- Chorodidaskalia: Studi di poesia e performance in onore di Angela Andrisano
15
- Sub palliolo sordido: Studi sulla commedia frammentaria greca e latina - Studies on Greek and Roman Fragmentary Comedies
13
The contributions collected in this volume primarily focus on Greek and Roman fragmentary comedy, from 4th - 3rd century B.C. down to palliata (along with togata and fabula Atellana). The edition and interpretation of comic fragments raise some problems in methodology; nevertheless, dramaturgical and linguistic aspects of such texts, which are preserved only partially, can be investigated. The transmission of the fragments partly depends on quotations and adaptations made by later writers. The last section of the volume is devoted to Greek and Roman mime.
19
The Pseudo-Xenophontic Athenaion politeia is a fundamental testimony of the political debate of the second half of the 5th century BC. The author reflects on the concrete functioning of Athenian democracy in an investigation at once political, social, and economic, highlighting the ideological framework that supported it and, consequently, the theoretical resistance of supporters of anti-democratic thought. For these reasons, the work has aroused considerable attention among scholars over time, although the date of the work and its authorship remain uncertain. Through a comparison with contemporary literary works concerned with the political sphere, this this Italian-language research aims to reconstruct the context in which the anonymous author elaborated the politeia. The study combines thematic comparison with linguistic analysis, highlighting the significance of thematic elements and linguistic traits in their communicative and social dimension.
- Laughing at domestica facta: Identity construction in mid-Republican Rome through the lens of the togata
In this monograph, the author embarks on a captivating journey to shed fresh light on the togata, a mid-Republican theatrical genre which survives only in fragments. The book seeks to answer pressing questions surrounding the togata's significance in identity construction during the middle Republic from a literary and cultural perspective. Delving deep into the fragmentary textual remains of the togata, the book explores how the Roman elite fashioned their identity. The author challenges the notion of monolithic identity construction, and explores the diverse forms of identity within the togata, offering a new perspective on the subject. This study thus positions the togata as a vital source for discerning the characteristics and beliefs by which the Romans distinguished themselves and their culture from others. By examining how Romans perceived themselves, their ideas about different social groups, and their literary and cultural ties to earlier traditions, this book aims to transform our understanding of the togata's role in Roman drama.
- What's in the Past: Symbols, Rituals and Folkloric Imagery in Historical-Comparative Perspective
Among the main questions relating to the interpretation of popular religiosity phenomena there are those on the usefulness of historical sources (archaeological and documentary) for the purposes of understanding the mythical-ritual present, on the presumed chronological continuity of practices and beliefs and on the legitimacy and effectiveness of historical-comparative method. These questions deserve to be taken up again on the basis of renewed investigations in the face of the now-occurring dissolution of what has been defined as "peasant civilization" and the renewed interest in intangible heritage both by communities in search of identity matrices and cultural memories and by part of the so-called "cultural market". This volume presents important works by Ignazio Buttitta.
The contributions collected in this volume deal with the relation between Comedy and Music, in the Greek sense of "art of the Muses". The volume offers an investigation on the metres and rhythms of poetic texts, on dance, on sociological aspects, on the psychagogical function of music itself, on the perceptions and theories that are transmitted to us from ancient sources. In the various essays a central role is played by Aristophanes, playwright and an expert music critic, animated by a negative prejudice towards the 'New Music', the poetic-musical revolution that influenced the dithyramb and the nomos, and then also the lyric sections of the tragedy.
- Credo iam ut solet iurgabit: Pragmatica della lite a Roma
- Epicarmo e pseudo-Epicarmo (frr. 240–297): Introduzione, traduzione e commento
Epicharmus (ca. 530–440 BCE) is the first known Greek comic poet, but his influence in antiquity was in no way limited to dramatic literature. As the result of the interest in moral, linguistic, and philosophical subjects displayed in Epicharmus' comedies, after his death Epicharmus was believed to have had a real competence in those fields, and a number of moral, philosophical, and scientific treatises in verse, known as the pseudo-Epicharmean writings, were thus composed so as to collect and circulate the doctrines which came to be identified as Epicharmus'. Beside discussing the evidence for serious subjects in Epicharmus' comedies, this volume provides an analytic study of the fragments from the pseudo-Epicharmean writings and makes a case for considering the so-called fragments ex Alcimo as genuine examples of philosophical parody from Epicharmus' authentic comedies. All these materials are presented with a revised text and a word-by-word philological and exegetical commentary.
