About this series

After achieving a decisive victory over the ruthless Ipis who rule the galaxy, Dante Carloman negotiated a treaty that saved all humans from extinction. The treaty allowed the humans and their allied species to become a semi-autonomous sector on the fringe of the Ipis empire—as long as the current Ipis empress, Fravashi, remains alive.

This arrangement does not sit well with the Ipis nobility. Humanity, and especially its usurper leader, Dante, must be destroyed, and they will not allow anything to impede that endeavor. Over the next ten years, ethnocentric Ipis aristocrats put in place a plan to eliminate Dante. In doing so, they inadvertently unleash an uncontainable catastrophe that will end all sentient life in the galaxy, including the Ipis.

In the face of this, the Empress' vast armadas are shattered, and she flees with the remnants of her once dominant fleets to the remote human planets. That sanctuary is only a temporary reprieve. The same maelstrom devouring the rest of the galaxy is not far behind. The empress, with a glimpse of prescience, sees Dante as the sole chance for everyone's survival. He has no clue how to succeed.

To have any possibility of saving those he holds dear, he must.

Dante Carloman is a computer geek who finds himself leading a small colony marooned on a barren planet. The daily life of these humans is a struggle for survival against both the elements and an alien species, they call harpies, who are bent on their eradication.   On the world the human colony named 'Cocytus', Dante uncovers unnerving clues linking humans to the harpies dating back to Earth's early civilizations. In order to solve this mysterious relationship, he must delve into the long-forgotten memories of an ancient artificial intelligence and deal with other alien species who seem to step from the pages of mythological legends.   Captured and sent to a world designed for the slow tortured death of the harpies' enemies, Dante discovers astounding truths about mankind's role in the galaxy. With only his wits as a weapon, He finds a chink in the aliens' all-encompassing control. But he must summon the courage to face an enemy who has not known defeat in a millennium. That tenuous chance will either save them or doom humanity to annihilation.   Humans, satyrs, centaurs and rocs working together in a bizarre melding of needs and expectations results in a gripping adventure laced with humor. It is a fast-paced novel that redefines what we think of as life.

The Ipis believed they had exterminated or enslaved all humans in the galaxy, unaware until recently that the star travelling humans had united behind a new leader, Dante Carloman and that a technologically backward planet called Earth, filled with those hated humans, existed on the fringe of their empire.   Standing before the American President, Elizabeth Stevenson, Dante recalled an earlier conversation with his commanders:   One general told him bluntly, "You'll have to get the Earth to join our side fast or I'll be overwhelmed, no matter what tactics we use."   "I'll find a way. I have to."   Another sighed, "All we have to do is depend on a relief armada from an alliance that didn't exist a year ago, unite a human population that has never agreed on anything since we crawled out of the swamp, and bust up an enemy that hasn't lost a significant battle in over a hundred and twenty years."   President Stevenson sniffed. "These aliens kill at will, without remorse, wherever they want. And there's not a thing I can do about it. I'd make a deal with the devil for a chance to save lives."   Dante glanced at the sky. "You'll have to. When what we call the harpies attacked you a few weeks ago, the Earth was irrevocably changed, and countless millions died. You have no more chance to maintain your lives as they once were than the Caribbean islanders did when they encountered Christopher Columbus."
