When Jennet's rescue collie, Winter, receives a canine heroism award for saving a child from drowning in a pond, the subsequent publicity reaches the ear of a dangerous person.  Before long, the life of this gallant collie is in danger and Jennet herself is involved in a quest that may well end in her death.

A shadowy intruder haunts Jennet's woods, and a woman who can't accept the death of her collie asks Jennet to help her find Rainbow Bridge where she believes her dog waits for her.           In the meantime Jennet discovers that her rare bi-black collie, Raven, belongs to somebody else.

An animal activist who calls herself Rima frees shelter dogs in and around Foxglove Corners to save them from being euthanized. Running wild in the countryside, at the mercy of hostile wildlife and hunters, dogs freed from a shelter to save them from possible euthanasia face an equally distressing fate and pose a risk to the people who inadvertently come in contact with them. Who poses the greater threat to Jennet Ferguson?  A fanatical animal rights activist or a rabid dog?

Jennet's sister, Julia, gives her vintage painting, Ada's Litter, for Christmas, unaware that this painting will soon begin to exhibit strange qualities, bringing bad luck to those who own it.  Another Christmas present, this one unexpected, is the white collie puppy Jennet discovers on her porch. As she adds the foundling to her household, she learns that a collie breeder's show prospect has gone missing.

While a sadistic individual is leaving collies tethered in the woods to die of starvation and dehydration, Jennet must come to grips with her tenuous hold on reality. Months ago a classroom shooting left one of her students dead.  Why is she now hearing a sound of gunfire when there is no shooter present?

Jennet follows a wounded collie, until it appears to vanish in the fog—or through a blue door on a barn that subsequently vanishes as well. To add to the strangeness, Jennet's Christmas present from her sister, a nostalgic portrait of a girl with a collie litter, appears to come with a curse attached, one that bodes ill for the painting's owner.

At the Spirit Lamp Inn, newly purchased by Jennet's friend Brent Fowler, a garden renovation turns up human bones buried in the inn's backyard.  The discovery rekindles interest in the case of a young woman who disappeared from the inn several decades ago. In the meantime, the Lakeville Collie Rescue League is faced with a possible lawsuit when the new president places a dog in a forever home without the knowledge of the owner.  Jennet finds herself in the unenviable position of trying to placate both the new owner and the original one who is determined to get her dog back, no matter what she has to do.

Jennet Ferguson's discovery of a collie puppy chained in the yard of a vacant house sets her on a search for a man whose activities may threaten Foxglove Corners' security. Meanwhile, horror novelist Lucy Hazen is mystified when scenes from her work-in-progress are duplicated in real life.

The house was beautiful… a vintage pink Victorian in a picturesque but lonely country setting, and the girl playing ball with her dog in the yard was friendly, suggesting that she and Jennet walk their dogs together some time. Jennet thinks she has made a new friend, until she returns to the house and finds a tumbling down ruin where the Victorian once stood and no sign that the girl and dog had ever been there.

While transporting a rescue collie to Foxglove Corners, Jennet discovers Forever, a ghost town tucked away in a densely rural section of Michigan's lower peninsula.  While dealing with Forever's mysteries and dangers, Jennet must cope with a rival collie rescue group in Foxglove Corners whose mission is to undermine and replace the original league.
