Distant Demon
The angel, Ouria, finally reunited with her wayward charge, guides Star through a whirlwind winter season.
Still riding the calm from her last purge and abruptly out of Crow's clutches, Star vows to never call him back.
Even as her reaper enhanced vision tempts her into deeper, darker, and more distant Unseen mysteries, her friends;
Paul at the shelter, Penelope as a client, and Sherika just as a person, in general;
All tug Star's focus away from the roil of her growing emotions.
With anger and resentment leading the onslaught, can Star harness that energy to fuel her resolve; to push forward when the way is hard, or be overrun as it gains momentum?

- Deals With Demons: Starling Nightcastle, #1
1
Everyone has their demons. Star has Crow. Star is the client whisperer in Crow's business model. Crow identifies some poor soul, marked for death, and gaining ground in the fight against their own demons. Star finesses the client, breaking the news of their imminent demise. Once they believe her, she gets to know them, their hopes, dreams, and regrets, as they ruminate on the unfairness of it all. Then, she makes the pitch. Would you sell your soul to save your life? How about someone else's soul? That's the deal Star offers their clients. That's the deal Star made with Crow. In exchange for each client she signs, he takes away her relentless pain; and every other emotion along with it. "Who misses life's little happinesses in the absence of any pain and suffering?"--Star Crow is a true demon, celestial before The Fall. His schemes give him power and influence among his peers and draw the ire of powerful enemies. Star is a night shift coroner at the center of a supernatural, corporate battle, one she can't even see without help from the other side. That might be enough to scare her off, on a feeling day. Post-emotional purge, though…? With enough fresh coffee and indulgent showers, she's pretty sure she's got it all under control.
- The Demon On Her Shoulder: Starling Nightcastle, #2
2
Star can see everyone's demons but her own. When Paul became the first person to ever turn down Crow's deal, Star celebrated for her friend even as her personal demons grew out of control. In the absence of a purge, Paul tries to help her cope, while Crow calls in some Demon favors to line up a new client for their soul-trading demon deal. However, things aren't running as smoothly as they used to, and the allied Angels & Reapers seize their opportunity. Star is Gifted with visions of the Unseen World all around her. Visible does not necessarily mean understandable, and Star has questions. Crow promises to explain if asked the right questions. The Angels won't even promise that much. "What would be the point of allowing you to perceive the truth for yourself if I was simply going to tell you what I wanted you to know?"--Damien the Angel Unsure where to turn, Star is faced with uncomfortable truths and a world that becomes less certain with every glance.
- Absent Angels: Starling Nightcastle, #3
3
Pete is the subject of an FBI manhunt, and Star's connections to the case land her on enforced vacation. With the delayed purge and its aftermath still fresh in their minds, her personal demon whisks her away to a tropical resort. Once he's poured her full of fruity frozen concoctions, Crow offers her a new deal meant to prevent delays in the future. Star's pretty sure it's what she wants, but an encounter with ghosts in Crow's past raises new questions about, not just what they're doing, but why. When new evidence brings Star home, her involvement with the case raises concerns for her safety. It's only a matter of time before Pete makes his move. Book Three of this dark and gritty urban fantasy shows the growing pains Star must endure before she can learn to defeat her own demons. She hasn't even figured out what they all are, yet.
