About this series
"An impassioned cautionary tale espousing the potential dangers of artificial intelligence in an increasingly dependent world." – The Independent Book Review
Welcome to District 33, a crime-infested slum in which only the strongest and most savvy can hope to survive.
Kim never set out to be a rebel; all she ever wanted was to settle down with Shan, but the AIs caught them in a flagrant act of unsanctioned intimacy, and now she has been exiled to the dangerous and decrepit outer districts.
Unbowed and defiant, she struggles to survive, even as the dark masters of the AIs scheme to draw her back under their control. She disappears into the shadows and thinks she has escaped—until an unexpected encounter in the parallel world of virtual reality draws her back into the fire.
And sets the stage for an epic confrontation that threatens a new world order.
Drawing on images of decaying civilizations, Stanfill creates a dark and forbidding world in which nothing is ever as it seems and the only way to survive is to claim the shadows as your own.

"A shining feat of literary sci-fi in a totalitarian futuristic society" – Independent Book Review 250 years in the future, artificial intelligences control every aspect of Kim's life - from what she has for breakfast to who she is allowed to have sex with. Living in the northeast province of what used to be the United States, she is a rising star at The Artificial Intelligence Company, training and managing sentient beings called "AIs" in the enigmatic parallel universe of Virtual Reality. She is comfortable and prosperous, but is she happy? No, not really. And then a seemingly harmless lark sends Kim's life spinning out of control as she launches into a journey of discovery that threatens to tear down society's corrupt powers, and possibly civilization itself. 1984 meets The Matrix in this riveting science fiction novel about corporate totalitarianism, personal freedom, and one brave character's journey to reclaim her humanity from an oppressive regime. A slow burn with an explosive finish, this is not a book to put down.
