About this series

When Sally O'Brian is asked by her friend Alan Ripple to rid his boat of ghosts, she is caught off-guard. Of all people, she never expected Alan, a dedicated scientist and a no-nonsense kind of guy, to believe that she could see and talk to ghosts.

Unfortunately, Sally has promised her daughter Jennifer and her son-in-law Jack that she will not get involved with any more ghosts or police investigations.

Jennifer and Jack are not going to be happy with her.

Sally O'Brian didn't always see ghosts. But when she and her husband were murdered, she discovered that she wasn't allowed to pass on through the Pearly Gates. She miraculously recovered but her husband is only with her as a ghost.   She has to find out who had killed her husband…and may still be attempting to kill her.   Sally also wants to help her young assistant Melody realize that her "fake" boyfriend Alan might have "real" feelings for her. Ghosts aren't the only thing that Sally notices even when most of those around her are oblivious!   But then Sally's neighbor "accidentally" falls down the stairs. The talkative ghost can't remember exactly what happened, but Sally is convinced that it was no accident.

Sally O'Brian sees ghosts.   Not   because she wants to. But when someone tried to kill her and her husband, she discovered that while his time had come, hers had not.   Now she was back in this plane of existence, but this time with a mission. Her role in life was to help those who could not pass over to the other side to do so.   And that mission included the plaintive voice of a young teenager who had witnessed the murder of a young man in the Cliff House.  And the ghost was willing to help Sally solve the current-day murder, but only after Sally had found out who had killed the unfortunate teenager eighty years earlier.

All Sally O'Brian wants is a quiet Christmas. Yes, she wants to rent out her newly renovated and re-furnished Cliff House for the holiday season, but that goal is secondary to just spending some quiet family time with her daughter Jennifer, her son-in-law Jack, her delightful granddaughter Kiera...and her dead husband Matthew.   But then she learns that her daughter has invited a whole host of family members to come and celebrate Christmas with them. While this normally would be a great source of joy for Sally, she's discovered a terrible secret.   The ornaments she's bought to decorate the Cliff House where all her relatives will be staying are haunted.   And the ghosts that haunt those decorations are the kind of ghosts that like to play tricks on the living.   Sally is afraid that this will be one Christmas no one wants to remember.

Before his death, Matthew O'Brian had a love of vineyards. His family owned a vineyard in Napa Valley, now run by Matt's sister Susan. So it was no surprise that Matt had helped his good friend Fred Ricci to purchase and establish a successful vineyard.   Now Fred is calling again, asking for Matt's help. Unfortunately, Matt is no longer alive, so Sally has to decide if she can help Fred.   "What do you need, Fred?"   "I need you to find my son. He's missing, and I suspect the worst."   Indeed, the worst did happen. Sally found Fred's son, Tony Ricci, dead in the vineyard, murdered. She is about to call the police when Tony's ghost begs her to find out who killed him.   "You have to help him, Sally," urged Matt. "For us, this is personal."   Sally nodded, knowing that she would run into opposition not only from Police Chief Harvey Morris, but also from her daughter, Jennifer. But how could Sally ignore Tony's pleas for help? Wasn't the reason Sally herself had come back from the dead to help other lost and confused souls find peace?

Sally O'Brian is delighted when she is asked to help the children at the school where she had taught for most of her career to plant a vegetable garden. The portion of the school yard where the Principal wanted to place the garden was wasted space, a large mud pit that had filled with water after the recent winter rains. She and two friends work out the details of how to drain the water, then fill the pits with extra soil to level the area out. It's a great plan…until she hears a voice calling to her.   "Help me!" cries an ethereal voice that only Sally can hear.   Then, as the water level recedes and the mud is scraped away, the eighth graders uncover a human hand.   "Get the children back inside," yells Sally. She certainly can't allow the children to learn that there's a ghost in the garden.
