About this series
There are different kinds of strength, her Shadow whispered. Such as the strength it takes to walk away from something good.
Yua has become one of the Seven, she has reached a truce with her Shadow, and nine Blood Wisps owe her their lives. But now she—and all of Midoka—has a new problem:
As Yua explores the Mists with the help of her Shadow, the Dark One learns of their connection... and He sees it as the opportunity He's been waiting for to invade Midoka.
Empress Nara is grateful for the coven's help, but she has yet other plans for Yua: the Blood Wisps will need help being accepted into wider society, and a Blood Wisp on the throne, married to her son, would go a long way towards lasting peace.
Yua has never wanted to rule or fight in a war, but now it seems she can't escape either... and the price is high as Blood Wisps choose sides, her potential future opens a chasm between her and Aza... and the Dark One stops at nothing to prove His power.
Blood will flow before a new era can begin—
But whose?

A young woman struggling with her Shadow. A blood-thirsty demon fighting for control. Neither prepared to lose against the other. The country of Midoka embraces magic, also known as the gift. Its most powerful order of sorcerers, the Mist Women, teach novices at the coven in Maishi Hou, and their graduates serve as expert advisors all over the world. Magic is every Midokan's undeniable birthright. Except for Yua. An unwilling resident at the Maishi Hou coven, she can't call forth the smallest flame. Her only childhood memory is soaked in blood. The only hint as to who—or what—she is lies in her blackened veins. But they also hide a shadow thirsting for blood, and even the leading Mist Woman fears it. All her life, Yua has fought her Shadow… until she meets Aza, who says there's no darkness without light. Yua is done being scared of herself, but embracing her Shadow could kill everyone. If she tries, she could lose herself forever… Or she could answer its whispers and become something new.

Joining the Seven is not what Yua always imagined. They are the most powerful sorceresses in the world, but Yua still doesn't have any magic, she still can't control the Mist demon in her blackened veins, she's barely controlling her thirst for blood, and she's definitely not a sorceress or powerful. She's nothing but a curiosity that fascinates the Seven, offered this position so they can better study her. But it was this or death, so Yua chose life. She chose knowledge, like any Seven would. And it's not all bad: Shizue is slowly teaching her control over her Shadow. The lessons are exhausting, though; Yua doesn't know how much more she can push herself. When another Blood Wisp arrives at the coven, newly turned and terrified, Yua needs to push herself further still. Neither the Seven nor the young man know who's responsible, but Yua suspects one thing: She'll find answers in the Mists. But will her Shadow betray their fragile co-operation the moment they enter, and can she pull it off without drawing the Dark One's attention?
