A world of light overpowers a world of darkness. Following the loss of Roseway, the infamous immortal warlock Henri Anderson has retreated to his castle in Greenwich, England. On the surface, it appears the mortals have won, but Henri has other ideas. After all, he didn’t need Roseway anymore, not when he has Holly’s parents held hostage and kidnapped the new mortal prince, Jeffery Speirs. Rebekah Jensen is done. After the incident in Roseway where she almost died, she wants nothing to do with the supernatural world, and she especially wants nothing to do with the immortal warlock who caused her ten months of torment. However, Holly is convinced the war is not over, and when it becomes apparent Rebekah is going to be competing in the ICW with Eternal Division, Holly is adamant that she and Mandy take part as well. Things soon take a turn for the worst when the year’s ICW host and new mortal king Jason Speirs demands there be chaperones, and soon, the ICW facility becomes a hotbed of mortal magic and an even bigger target for Henri. It doesn’t take long until clique participants start turning up dead in the hallways. When Mandy admits she dreamt of those deaths years ago, which inspired her novel Bleeding Misery, everyone’s attention turns to the Foreseer for guidance. But Mandy can’t help them, not in the way they want her to, and especially not while she is under Henri’s influence.

Likewise, the immortals are facing a similar predicament with the rise of the Rebel Coven—a group led by Melissa Young that seeks to put an end to Henri’s rule. Now fourteen, Rebekah Jensen no longer seeks to distance herself from the supernatural world. Such a feat was proven impossible at the ICW, after all. With the division of the immortals, she begins to believe her group finally has a fighting chance, at least until she starts to dream of the Rebel Coven leader and a dystopian world where the humans are enslaved and the mortal magic users are dead. Enter Andre Robinson, the half-immortal witch whose Spy father tried to kill her many years ago. She has made peace with her past as best as she can. However, when she finds out the Rebel Coven has formed an alliance with her father and that they kidnapped her cousin, Holly, she embarks on a journey with Rebekah and Mandy that forces her to confront her painful past and the man who was at the center of it all.

It is amongst her own kind that she feels she will finally be safe, since it is evident Marywood is no longer safe for her. The infamous immortal warlock, Henri Anderson, is still relentlessly hunting her, and he will stop at nothing until he has her. However, things soon take a turn for the worst when Rebekah meets a fellow Innocent, Takara Nakahara, who seems to know very little about herself, including the identity of her Other Part. Cousins Holly White and Andre Robinson return to Ivanestible following the discovery of the murder of Rebekah’s family, and from there, Holly gets roped into joining the Royal Guard in order to account for the group’s diminishing numbers. Despite her protests, Holly is subjected to intense training and even accompanies the Royal Guard to Peshawar, Pakistan for an assignment. However, tragedy strikes that leaves Holly both physically and emotionally scarred, and nothing Andre seems to do helps heal her wounds. Meanwhile, Henri embarks on the next stage of his plan by sealing off Marywood, Florida. Suddenly, the town becomes a post-apocalyptic nightmare where humans are reduced to animalistic behavior as they fight for survival—and Foreseer Amanda Palmer is caught in the middle of it all
