Dr. Radford Michael Jones has dedicated his life to the treatment of the goblyns, fae, dragons, sirens and even more races which humans call the Errata. Frustrated in his attempts to treat the newest race to emerge, Jones consults Magorian, whom the Errata call the first and only wizard of the millennium, his skepticism at full throttle. Benjamin Magorian III has no time for the Errata, who did not spend a lifetime learning magic as he has done. He has even less time for Dr. Jones, who doesn't respect his work. Yet his powers are needed. Magorian and Jones' combined talents embroil them in a deadly search for an ancient manuscript, the Book of Morcant, which may hold the dark answers both of them so desperately need. They're braced for threats from everywhere but between them. The world's first modern wizard, Benjamin Magorian, and Dr. Michael Jones have been licking their wounds and recovering from their near-fatal confrontation with the siren, Aurelius, at Pont du Gard, in France. But time is running out to save the fractured world of humans and Old Ones from Aurelius' scheme to summon the old gods and avoid the destruction the gods would hail down upon every mortal, no matter what their race. The two bend their talents and expertise to figuring out who Agrona's shield might have been. Neither of them are braced against threats to their odd, but effective friendship, until Jamie ap Morningside, a lovely fae with deadly secrets, steps between them. The race to find Agrona's shield and keep it out of Aurelius' hands appears to have foundered before it has properly begun… The Shield of Agrona is part of the urban fantasy series, Magorian & Jones, by Taylen Carver. 1.0: The Memory of Water 2.0: The Triumph of Felix 3.0: The Shield of Agrona 3.5: The Wizard Must Be Stopped! 4.0: The Rivers Ran Red 5.0: The Divine and Deadly Urban Fantasy Novel ___ Praise for The Shield of Agrona: Exciting urban fantasy that use many familiar tropes while still staying fresh and unique. He must choose to save himself, or save the world… Dr. Michael Jones, director of the old races refugee camp in Spain, is pressured to return to England for his own good. Life in Toledo, with Magorian, the first and only wizard of this century, and the old races who live in an uneasy truce with humans, is not good for him. Besides, the siren Aurelius has clearly abandoned his quest to summon the old gods to avenge himself upon the human race. When Magorian translates the invocation to summon Agrona, goddess of death and carnage, found on a fifth century Celtic shield, Jones realizes Aurelius hasn't given up his quest at all. Aurelius is looking for the Triumph of Felix—one of the keys needed to summon Agrona, and is weeks ahead of them. This was a lighter, more humorous addition to the world of Magorian and Jones. A true side story and can be read independent of the rest of the series. I was riveted from beginning to end and was completely immersed in the story, almost feeling as if I was taking part in finding the solution to the mystery. Thought-provoking without being preachy, quirky, and including an excellent Star Trek reference (which I particularly admire since I've been a fan for over 50 years), this was a really enjoyable read. Lots of funny moments, but written in a understated, matter of fact way. The phrasing/delivery of some lines was just beautiful and made it that much better. ___ Canadian author Taylen Carver writes edgy urban fantasy, doesn't pull punches, and would rather be writing unless otherwise notified. Michael hides in Wales, burying himself in the work generated by a health system in crisis, as Britain deals with the fallout from multiple volcanic eruptions in Scotland…until Magorian finds him there. They're down to the wire in their efforts to save the fractured world of humans and Old Ones from Aurelius' scheme to summon the old gods and avoid the destruction the gods would hail down upon every mortal, no matter what their race. They must find a way to permanently halt Aurelius, and Magorian thinks he might know how. The only problem? Magorian brought Jamie with him… The Rivers Ran Red is part of the urban fantasy series, Magorian & Jones, by Taylen Carver. 1.0: The Memory of Water 2.0: The Triumph of Felix 3.0: The Shield of Agrona 4.0: The Rivers Ran Red 5.0: The Divine and Deadly Urban Fantasy Novel ___ Praise for the Magorian & Jones series: Plenty of exciting twists and turns.
