In the concluding story of The Jexville Chronicles trilogy, Dixon Sinclair moves to Jexville to run the local paper, resolve the turmoil over her father's murder. She moves into the McVay house, which is her heritage. Running the local paper is her last-ditch attempt to save herself. Two teenage girls disappear from a sandbar on the Pascagoula River. When the bodies are found, hung and burned, it's clear that something other than simple murder is at work. Couple that with attacks on the local Catholic Church, and Dixon's research brings up the possibility of Judas burnings—a ritual to exorcise evil. Dixon trusts no one, but she must work with Sheriff J.D. Horton even though she suspects he's protecting an older river man, Eustace, and his companion, a much younger and psychologically damaged woman. When the investigative focus shifts to a young Mexican transient, the town is ready to mete out justice, unless Dixon and J.D. move to stop it.

Tocada es una novela que tiene lugar en los años veinte en unos pueblitos apartados y olvidados en Mississippi. Es la historia de Mattie Mills una joven de dieciséis años que llega a Jexville como esposa comprada por Elika Mills y de las personas extraordinaria que encuentra en Jexville empezando con la dramáticamente bella y realizada JoHanna McVay y su avispada hija precoz Duncan. Un día un rayo le pega a Duncan y aunque la niña sobrevive el accidente comienza a soñar sueños pregonando el futuro trágico de otros personajes de la novela. En Tocada se sacan a relucir temas importantes y universales como los de la tolerancia, la crueldad, el abuso doméstico y las pretensiones sociales. El lirismo del tono en la novela se hace sentir en la dulce y rica descripción de la naturaleza del área sur de Mississippi convirtiéndola, por ende, en un personaje más. El título se refiere a Duncan por haber quedado 'tocada' pero a la vez hay que darle una comprensión polisémica a la palabra tocada en vista de como las circunstancias de lo que viene siendo al fin y al cabo una narración de cierto suspenso y tragedia donde todos los personajes, incluyendo el lector, quedan 'tocados'. Es una novela impactante en su mensaje de fuerza femenina, de la bondad de muchos seres humanos y de la incomprensible crueldad e ignorancia de otros.
