- Cousin Phillis: A Romantic Classic
2
Cousin Phillis—a miniature masterpiece—is set in the 1840s, when the coming of the railway was changing the face of England, and quiet rural communities, coming into contact with the outside world, were changed for ever. The story focuses on the effect these changes have on a naïve country girl, Phillis, as she encounters love, with all its pains and pleasures, for the first time. The story is about 19-year-old Paul Manning,^ who moves to the country and befriends his mother's family and his (second) cousin Phillis Holman, who is confused by her own placement at the edge of adolescence.
- North and South: A Passionate Tale of Love Across the Divide
1
Forced to move from the rural tranquillity of southern England to the turbulent northern mill town of Milton, Margaret Hale takes an instant dislike to the dirt and noise that seems to characterize her new home and its inhabitants - even the handsome and charismatic cotton mill owner, John Thornton. But as she begins to settle in, and to understand the nature of the surrounding poverty and injustice, events conspire to throw her and Thornton together. Amidst the chaos of industrial unrest, they must learn to overcome the prejudices of class and circumstance and admit their feelings for one another. One of literature's greatest romances, North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell is both an incisive social commentary and an electric portrayal of all-conquering love.
- Lizzie Leigh: A Short Story
3
Lizzie Leigh is a poignant tale about illicit love and regrets, ending in delight. It deals with the story of a young girl Lizzie who commits sin and has to face the repercussions. Gaskell brilliantly portrays the deep and true relations of a family and ends the story with a moving reunion. Touching and emotional ...
- Cranford: A Classic Novel
4
"Cranford" is the best known and most charming of Elizabeth Gaskell's novels. It is a comic portrait of an early Victorian country village and its genteel inhabitants, mostly women, whose social attitudes remain firmly unchanging against the modernising world, and whose domestic details dominate conversation. Gaskell describes the uneventful lives of Cranford's inhabitants in this witty and poignant classic which deserves to be read and re-read.
