A murder. A family in mourning. An old promise. It's the 1870s, and Emma's comfortable life on her family's sheep station on the Murray River is about to be turned upside down. She isn't the only one dismayed by the quarrelsome visitors who arrive at her neighbour's property. But nor is she one to step away from a problem. So when one of those visitors turns up dead in the stable, and that old promise rears its ugly head, she agrees to investigate the death. But the promise? Well, she'll avoid that if she can. Of course, if she draws the attention of the killer the promise won't matter anyway.

When Emma promised to see her friend Hilda safely up the Murray and onto the train for Melbourne, she certainly wasn't expecting to find her body at the family's woodpile. Despite discovering that even the dead have secrets, she won't let that deter her from taking care of what her friend left behind. But the children prove to have secrets of their own and aren't above a little sabotage. It's her care for them that eventually brings Emma face to face with the killer, where she discovers that revealing some secrets can be downright deadly. And Daniel isn't about to let her forget why she's on the Mary B.

Author

Irene Sauman

Irene is a retired historian living in Perth, Western Australia. She grew up and went to school in New South Wales by the mighty Murray River, the setting for her cosy mystery books. Now living in Western Australia, she has three children and four grandchildren, and a sister who beta reads her books for plot holes and to see how quickly she can solve the mystery. So far she's not winning. When not writing, Irene reads, watches tennis, is an awesome croquet player (old age and treachery will defeat youth and enthusiasm every time), and has a reasonably green thumb, which means very little dies in her garden, unlike in her cosy mysteries. Her favourite authors-past are Anthony Trollope, Dorothy Sayers, Ngaio Marsh and Agatha Christie. She read heaps of modern authors too, of course, not restricted to those who write cosy mysteries, but they are a favourite.
