About this series

Emmett Casey is a man desperately trying to outrun his own history and his family's heritage. He seeks forgiveness but knows there is no redemption in it. The long road of life now behind him in which he has attempted to atone for the sins of the past while they still haunt his dreams and waking thought, Casey fights his way toward respectability as he lives his life for those that can no longer live it for themselves. No longer young he recalls his past lives and the youthful energy that fueled his frenetic struggle to acceptance. Sorry for those lives of others that he took, thankful for the lives he saved and regretful for the life he didn't live himself, in this, the third chapter of the saga of Emmett Casey, he at last turns and comes to terms with his past.

The mean streets of inner-city Chicago and the high-rise housing projects are a tough place to grow up unless you learn to swim like the other fish. Emmett Casey is a quick study but a slow learner, and he learns most of his lessons the hard way. As he navigates through the guilt and shame instilled by the Catholic nuns and priests, he learns that he can only trust his own instincts and the example that his father sets for him. He struggles to function in a world where he is far too smart for a society that moves too slowly for his restless spirit. He finds trouble because it is more interesting than the life that surrounds him, but trouble can have mortal implications when it goes beyond just interesting. Bad decisions and lack of commitment are tough to counter.   As a young adult with no direction the Army finds him. War takes him to the places within himself that he fears the most. The man in the mirror begins to resemble his father.Through the steaming jungles of Vietnam, Emmett struggles with his world and himself. The rough beginnings in the slums of Chicago shaped him and made him tough; the last thing he wanted to be. Good and evil become relative to the situation, and he learns to dance with his devils—quickly.   Balancing heroism and catastrophe, Emmett walks through his damaged childhood to become a decorated veteran, finding trouble and salvation at every juncture. He prays for redemption but knows he doesn't deserve it, forgiveness although he cannot accept it. Ultimately, the time has come for him to choose: face his ill-conceived choices and rise above his actions—or die.

Mick (Little Mick) Casey, a tail gunner in WWII, comes home from the war a hero in everyone's eyes but his own. Scarred by the horrors he has witnessed, Little Mick does what many returning veterans do in order to cope—he learns not to feel. Stepping back onto the civilian streets, he assumes the perception of normalcy. He marries, has a family, and tries to make a life in inner-city Chicago. A poignant tale of how a father's inability or unwillingness to heal creates a love-hate relationship with his son, sending the child down a steep path of loneliness and self-destruction. For I Have Sinned continues the saga of the Casey clan, intensely loyal and devoted, but only to each other. Set against a backdrop of war, violence and crime it weaves the history of an ill-fated child's transition from a lonely, inner-city rebel and decorated war veteran to a man who looks all too familiar to him, a man like his father—all earned the hard way.
