After being infected with nanites from a dead Pax Romana super-soldier, Genevieve should have died, like every other infected civilian. Instead she survived, remade in the image of the so-called Installs. Unable to truly trust her any longer, her people send her deep into Pax Romana space with a mission: upload a virus to destroy the Install reserves. When she arrives, she finds not the reserves but the self-destructive dregs of the program, the few who didn't die on the battlefield. When unaltered soldiers show up at her door, she assumes they're here about the trial her team buried: burnout did remove the nanites, but it also caused unimaginable pain, driving all those it reached to suicide.   Instead, the soldiers accuse her of working for the resistance on her home planet, and when they can't find any proof, they butcher her back to remove her carbon composite wings and arrest her. Imprisoned, awaiting execution, Genevieve sees only one way to escape and join her partner and friends somewhere safe. LSF shoved a dead Pax Romana spy's implant into her head and sent her in place of that spy in a prisoner exchange. Now, not only does the Pax Romana empire blame Sienna for the deception, but the implant is leaking, eroding her sanity with scraps of personality and memories of torture. Worse, she must have been expected to die of the procedure once the exchange was complete, because now someone's trying to finish the job.   Trapped at a Pax Romana facility with no one she can trust except perhaps the building's Near-AI, Sienna must find a way home without losing her life or her self.
