Johnny was trying to outrun a Hell of a past, and he thought he had been doing a decent job of it. He had found himself a life in Anthem City, and a semblance of a family, finally experiencing what he considered to be peace. Then a mysterious woman walked past the stoop where he and his boys spent their time, and he found that he couldn't get her out of his mind. That night Anthem was plunged into a complete blackout, and the heat of the summer caused the city's residents to boil over; rioting, looting, and setting the city alight. Along with the blackout came the threat of a serial killer at large on the streets of Anthem, but that was the least of Johnny's worries. He knew all too well that the real peril wasn't from the people in the streets, nor from the killer in the shadows. The danger was coming from above and below, and Johnny would be the only one who could stop the soldiers of Heaven and Hell from tearing his city and his family apart.

Johnny Viridian's demon of an ex-girlfriend had returned to ruin his life. For weeks he searched for the murderous Saraqael, only to come up empty-handed at every turn. When one of the boys showed up on the steps of Emerald Manor covered in deep claw marks, half-dead, Johnny was presented with still another mystery to solve; what was the thing that attacked Ricky? That same night, after healing Ricky's wounds, Johnny and Jenny discovered what Saraqael had in store for them. She'd styled herself Sara Starling, Anthem City's newest sweetheart, and she was preaching against the Devil, and his wife, to thousands of her followers every night in person, and through a televised cable program. Saraqael and her Starlings set out to expose infernals and celestials to the world, driving Johnny to desperate measures to stop them from putting Jenny, Billy, and the boys in danger. Every night he hunted the creature that Saraqael called her beast, while losing himself in the darkness he thought he had long left behind. No one knew that there was someone more dangerous waiting, and watching...
