When a beautiful but scared woman tries to hire Winston Karpathian, he wonders why. Winston possesses only small magic, nothing spectacular, and certainly nothing helpful for a woman like that. But when she turns up dead, Winston must work with a detective who doesn't believe in magic to find the woman's killer. Because Winston believes that the woman's request for a spell might have more to do with her death than the weapon that killed her. "Rusch is a great storyteller." —RT Book Reviews

Ruby had the idea—help the magic users in New Orleans survive Hurricane Katrina. Pretty charitable for a tiny cat. Winston thought he knew why. The southeast Asia tsunami scared her, made her realize the vulnerability of her home on the Oregon Coast to natural disaster, too. But when her offer of help turns into a rescue, Ruby watches helplessly as other familiars move into her little house. Being, after all, a cat, Winston expects a rebellion… "Rusch is a great storyteller." —RT Book Reviews
