About this series

"My name is Kat Voyzey, and I am made up of one-third caffeine, one-third bone and muscle, and one-third crippling self-doubt. As the caffeine fades, self-doubt rushes in to fill the empty places."

Six months ago, Kat Voyzey quit her job at Holy Heart Medical Center to become an independent private investigator. Now, as the owner of Voyzey Investigations, she's ready to make the world a better place, one satisfied client at a time.

That was the plan, at least. But the life of a PI is far grimmer than she expected. Her clients are dodgy as hell, the work is depressing, and her temper is getting her into trouble left and right.

She left a steady paycheck behind, for this?

Kat's ears perk up when she hears about Haley Green. The college freshman disappeared from her bedroom early one morning, and no one's been able to find her. Elated at the prospect of a real missing persons case, Kat jumps in to track her down. But from the very start, none of the stories line up. Everyone swears they want the missing woman found. But if that's true, why are Haley's roller derby teammates playing defense against the truth?

"The last day in October began with a violation of the employee dress code and ended with a dead employee in the medical records department. I've always said I like my job because of the variety, but this was a bit much, even for me."   HR director Kat Voyzey has a talent for getting things done. Tamping down office drama? Soothing egotastic executives? Dodging calls from her bully of a boss? It's all in a day's work at the Holy Heart Medical Center.   When a beloved coworker is shot dead on Halloween night, questions fly through the hospital like a hail of bullets. And when the police seem inclined to blame the victim, an unlikely sleuth emerges from the human resources department.

That was true in ninth grade history class, and just as true in a murder investigation."   Kat wasn't thrilled to be "volunteered" to attend the Holy Heart Medical Center team building retreat, but after settling into the remote mountain cabin with the team, she has to admit it's not all bad. The setting is beautiful and there are plenty of snacks. She having more fun than she expected. Unfortunately, enjoyment turns to terror when a member of the group is literally stabbed in the back!   As a wicked winter storm cuts off access to the outside world a quick rescue becomes impossible. Suspicion and paranoia are on the rise. Kat has a plan for flushing the killer out into the open, but she can't accomplish it alone. With the killer watching her every move, choosing who to trust is a matter of life and death.
