    Uneasy Allies: The Kaerling, #7

Five disparate people drawn together in pursuit of one goal.   I so enjoyed the latest instalment of The Kaerling. The action was pacy and compelling. The characters had really settled into themselves and were well-rounded. I read it all in one sitting and was totally engrossed! Jenny Poulter   Their mission was simple – to rescue Lally and Derri from the evil kaerlings.   But catching up with the kaerlings proves to be anything but simple, and the five companions discover that they can't completely trust each other.   This is the seventh volume in the epic saga that is The Kaerling.   The Kaerling is a series of linked novellas that can be read individually as well as in chronological order.   Warning: contains scenes of a sexual nature and some violence which some readers may find upsetting.

Lored finally has enough evidence to clear the herb woman, but can his claims absolve Rue of the charges of murder?   Although the focus changes between characters and places, it all flows well from one chapter to the next. The overall effect is very satisfying. I think this is the most accomplished instalment so far. Well-structured, great character- and world building. Can't wait for the next book! W Thomas   When Lored discovers damning evidence against the Prince Consort himself, the trial for the herb woman's life begins.   But Tari is beset by Stio, who thinks she is present on Kiros with dark, ulterior motives.   Meanwhile, Otta and Erl, waiting patiently for Lored and Tari to meet them at the crossroads, are hunted by Stio and his men on the borders of the Wild Wood.   Can Lored establish Rue's innocence? Can Tari convince Stio that neither she nor the taku-kevir are a threat to the throne of Kiros? And can the twins continue to evade capture? Find out in Dead Man's Witness!   If you enjoy novels set in other worlds such as Middle Earth and Osten Ard, you will love The Kaerling series!   Warning: contains scenes of a sexual nature and some violence which some readers may find upsetting.

Lored and his companions are on a rescue mission but first they have to endure a sea voyage.   "I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It's a beautifully written story and I find all of the characters interesting. The descriptions, particularly of the sea voyage, were fabulous. I can feel myself being present in the places described. There are lots of hints of problems to come and foreshadowing which all adds to a sense of mystery." E Baxter   Lored and Otta are struck down with seasickness. Tari finds herself nursing a man she fears and a woman she hates. And Erl has worries of his own...   Can the companions conceal Otta's kaerling heritage when they land on the Isle of Kiros? And, how will Lored find the herb woman who has the remedy he and Otta will need when they set sail again in pursuit of the kaerlings?   Thwarted at every turn, Lored finds himself agreeing to help the Kirridians without even knowing what needs to be done. Everything seems to be against the companions; how will they overcome the obstacles in their path?   Fair Wind follows the travels of Lored, Tari, Otta and Erl as they seek to rescue two people who have been abducted by the evil kaerlings. As Lored attempts to investigate the truth of the charges brought against Rue, the herb woman, Tari tries to hide her insecurities and doubts behind a facade of serenity.   "This is a fantastic read. The characters are all well drawn and the landscape through which the characters move is familiar and easily imaginable, yet quite magical as well." W Thomas   Lored and Tari must keep the twins' presence on the Isle of Kiros a secret, as the taku-kevir starts to question witnesses to events that happened over a year before.   But Lored's investigations are hampered by the Kirridian fascination for horse-racing.   If Lored can't free the herb woman from prison, he and Otta (who is in hiding) won't be able to travel north to continue their pursuit of the kaerlings who have abducted Lally and Derri.   This fantasy tale will grip you from page one and won't let you go until you've read every single volume in the series! If you enjoy Terry Brooks, David Eddings, Tad Williams and/or JRR Tolkien, you'll love The Kaerling.   The Kaerling is a series of linked novellas that can be read individually as well as in chronological order.   Warning: contains scenes of a sexual nature and some violence which some readers may find upsetting.

    Prince Silas: The Kaerling, #11

After escaping from the Isle of Kiros, the companions face a long ocean voyage together …   "The writing is tight and skilful and I really enjoyed the descriptions. Each character is well described and they are all very different to each other. There's lots of going on and lots of different viewpoints and these work well together without becoming confusing. I especially liked the climax with the fight with the pirates." E Baxter   The four companions are finally heading north once more in the wake of the kaerlings who have abducted Derri and Lally.   But the ocean is vast and pirate ships lurk in fog banks. Can the companions reach Jargoiden before the pirates attack them?   If they are unable to reach Jargoiden, Derri will be assimilated into his violent family once more, and Lally may end up as a sacrifice to the terrible kaerling god.   If you enjoy Ursula K Le Guin's work, you'll love this series! Inspired by authors such as Le Guin, Terry Brooks and David Eddings, Freya Pickard has developed her own style of fantasy which edges towards the dark and the dangerous, rather than the cosy and comfortable.   Warning: contains scenes of a sexual nature and some violence which some readers may find upsetting.

    Woodbine: The Kaerling, #12

As Clay and Lally adapt to life in Orosturbe, Lored and his companions find themselves trapped on a desert island.   Freya Pickard's style is fresh and lively, rhythmic and cadenced, in step with the development of the story, with the dialogues and the peculiar traits of the characters. Her imagery is decidedly rich and vivid, capable of taking the reader on a tangible, real journey. C Messelodi   When Nilo rescues Lored and his friends, he has no idea he will shortly be facing imminent death.   If the four companions can't find a way to heal Nilo of the poison in his body, they will never be able to leave his island.   Can Lored and the others discover the right antidote before Nilo dies and leaves them stranded just a few days sailing from Jargoiden?   This is a fantasy quest unlike all others. If you enjoy contemporary fantasy writers such as D Wallace Peach, Elizabeth Baxter and Chris R Sendrowski, you'll love Freya Pickard's dark fantasy series, The Kaerling!   The Kaerling is a series of linked novellas that can be read individually as well as in chronological order.   Warning: contains scenes of a sexual nature, violence and slavery, which some readers may find upsetting.

    Jargoiden: The Kaerling, #13

The companions have reached the shores of Jargoiden in pursuit of their abducted friends, but how do they even start tracking the kaerlings?   "The relatively peaceful opening moves through a series of escalating peaks of tension, culminating in an intense and frightening conclusion. There's a great mix of characters who stand out from one another and even contrast  ‐ eg. Tari's vulnerability versus Otta's fearlessness." W Thomas   It falls to Lored, the taku-kevir, as the eldest of the companions to find the right road to travel.   Not only is the scenery of Jargoiden foreign and alien to the travellers, the very inhabitants of the land seem intent on thwarting the companions' progress…   When they're ambushed, Lored and Otta are taken prisoner, whilst Tari and Erl flee blindly into the forest.   This Dark Fantasy series can be read as individual books or as part of the chronological sequence. If you're into Osten Ard, Game of Thrones, Middle Earth or Mythago Wood, you'll love this!   Warning: contains scenes of a sexual nature, violence, rape and slavery, which some readers may find upsetting.
