There are the invisible members of society; they exist all around us. Most of the time, we walk by them, seeing but not seeing. Augustus Purce learned long ago that the best means of avoiding unwanted attention was to become one of the invisible. He does it so well that even in his tiny village, everyone runs to the other side of Main Street to avoid him. For if they bothered to look more closely, which Augustus emphatically does NOT want, they might see him. Everyone knows that Augustus went off to war against the South, and came back when their sons, fathers, and brothers did not. He knows it too. Hiding is the only way he can survive. But now it is eleven years on from the end of the war, the nation is celebrating its Centennial soon, and someone has the poor taste to turn up dead in the house of one of the more esteemed families in the village. Augustus forces himself from hiding in order to catch a murderer, only to find that he must confront the unpleasantness of the past.

Augustus Purce is a man who has hidden behind a construct for so long, he's no longer sure who he is. But events in his little village of Dunverton, Massachusetts soon make it impossible for him to hid any longer. The year is 1876, and in New England, everyone is looking forward to the coming Centennial celebrations. Everyone except Mary Whitegate's visiting cousins, whose forebears fled back to England during the early days of the Revolution. Soon, her cousin's opinion doesn't matter any longer, as Charlotte Whitegate has had her head bashed in, and nobody saw who did it, even though there were two other people in the room. Augustus falls in with Bill Wright, the town constable, in trying to solve an unpleasant puzzle before any other lives are lost - and Augustus realizes that he's been hiding from the wrong people.

Augustus Purce knows that nothing is ever what it seems. He's a pretty fair of example of that old saw, but now he has to take the village constable into his confidence. They have a rather nasty crime to unravel, and though it means Augustus will be dodging in and out of character, he's happy for the mental stimulation. Meanwhile, the rest of the villagers have their own secrets to tend to.

Constable Wright and Augustus are engaged in the delicate dance of interviewing witnesses, with only the most minor of distractions besetting them. Foremost among these is Prudence Whitegate herself, who seems to see herself as a basilisk in the hallway, with her own purposes firmly in hand. Meanwhile, Doctor Poole is having a long, hard think about his motivations where Mary is concerned when Augustus springs a little surprise on him. And Mary is trying to sort out how to slip away from Celia and Julia at the inn. She has forgotten how very clever her girlhood friend is, however. Otto, on the other hand, has decided to sit back and stop worrying. No good ever came of fussing over a problem.

Augustus and Bill Wright set about searching for clues, all of which point to Charlotte having been a rather shady character. Ian tells his recollection of events to a wary Julia, who isn't sure what to make of him. Celia takes in a lodger at an unexpected moment, made worse by her distraction at having found the girls are gone. And behind the strangeness of the day's events, a question must be asked: do we know our neighbors as well as we ought?

Born and raised in New England, Kate Gray has a degree in Classical Archaeology from UNC Chapel Hill. Her love of history and sociology are the two biggest influences on her writing, followed shortly by a love of all things magical and fantastic. In fact, it was being given the first few Harry Potter books (from children she was nannying at the time), that reawakened the desire to find the magic in our own world. It may not be as easy to see, or accomplish the same feats as that which comes from the wave of a wand - but it's out there.Kate lives in New England with her Minnesotan husband, and their two wild boys.
