- Seven Days with Gehazi
Gehazi was not a man without opportunities. As a servant of the prophet Elisha, he had the privilege of observing Elisha's life, hearing his message, and witnessing miracles. Gehazi wanted to be just like Elisha except for one thing. He wanted the acclaim for himself, not for God. So Gehazi became discontented with his lot in life and allowed rebellion to grow in his heart. Gehazi's greed presented itself full-blown when he saw Naaman's treasures, heard Naaman offer them to his master, and heard his master refuse the deserved reward. Gehazi wanted that treasure more than he wanted anything else, and with greed controlling his mind, he went after it. Every day we train ourselves in one direction or another by the thoughts we think, the words we say, the actions we take, and the deeds we do. We do not fall in a moment; the predisposition to yield to sin has been forming, building, germinating - but not necessarily consciously so. The story of Gehazi proves once again that each person has a choice when presented with the truth of God. Is He real? Does He reward those who seek Him? Or is life without absolutes, filled only with chance, illusion and greed?
- Seven Days with Hezekiah
Remember King Hezekiah? He was one of the last good kings from Judah. He reigned in Jerusalem during the time when Assyria was rapidly becoming a world empire. When Assyria attacked Judah and surrounded Jerusalem, King Hezekiah lay helpless, gravely ill, dying. Isaiah, the prophet, came and told the king he would not recover. He would die. What happened next? Hezekiah's story is told three times in the Bible: in II Kings, II Chronicles, and in the book of Isaiah. Besides revealing the history of the times, Hezekiah's story poses several questions: "How can a child be faithful to God and also show respect for parents in a home where parents do not acknowledge God? How can a person forget bad childhood memories? Is God more concerned about your form of worship or the condition of your heart? Does trusting God mean that you don't do anything except wait? Although Hezekiah's main goal was to serve God and undo all the evil his father, Ahaz, had done, he also longed to reunite the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah spiritually. Would the celebration of the Passover be his golden opportunity? God tested Hezekiah's faith three times. How did King Hezekiah face these tests? What can we learn from his good, but not perfect, life?
- Seven Days with Joab
Whatever became of Joab, renegade commander of King David's army? Amidst wars, murders and jealousies, the story of Joab weaves in and out, always intertwined with King David's dysfunctional family. King David followed God and that was partly why Joab followed David. He could see the victories and blessings God showered on David. He wanted a piece of that. He'd also heard that the women adored David. They sang, "King Saul has killed his thousands, David his ten thousands." So, Joab joined David's rag-tag band of followers. David noticed him. But Joab had a strong personality - headstrong, vindictive, sometimes overzealous. He liked to make his own rules, be his own God, his own judge and jury. In Joab's eyes, David took too long to act and wasn't always fair. Joab could easily see what needed to be done. Family was important, but the enemy was the enemy - no truce, no honor. So, when did hero worship turn to disdain? Why is Joab called the Judas of the Old Testament? Joab learned that David wasn't as moral as he had thought. Joab had his own sense of morality buried deep inside his pride. When David involved Joab in his own sin, not once but twice, Joab felt his influence eroding. He could only stand by and watch David and his God battle out the consequences of sin. As David got older, his body became weak. Joab was still strong. He could foresee a vacuum in the affairs of state. Joab knew that the old king needed to be replaced. What action should he take?
- Seven Days with the Risen Christ
Jesus told his disciples he would be crucified, but he also said he would rise again on the third day. Nevertheless, when the soldiers arrested Jesus, the disciples fled. Jesus died and was buried and everyone thought that was the end. It seemed only the enemies of Jesus remembered his words. They ran to Pilate and said, "Make the tomb secure. His followers might come, steal his body and claim he rose from the dead." So Pilate sealed the tomb and set a 24-hour guard. On the first day of the week an angel came and rolled back the stone revealing an empty tomb to the soldiers. Only the linen which had wrapped Jesus' body remained. The shocked soldiers fell down as dead men. Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and wept because she thought someone had taken Jesus' body. Peter and John came, too. Peter saw the grave clothes and wondered. John saw the same evidence and believed. During the next forty days, Jesus appeared to his disciples and other believers in various places and at different times. Some were frightened, others thought he was an apparition. Still others believed he had indeed risen from the dead and they worshiped him. They risked their lives to tell the world that Jesus' resurrection proved Jesus was who he claimed to be - the promised Messiah, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.

I like to write, read, teach, sing, play the piano, swim, cook, play in the yard, and walk by the ocean. I prefer coloring books to plain paper, summer to winter, daytime to nightime, and morning to afternoon. I like large families, but I prefer to visit with one friend at a time. I love to study the Bible and discuss what God is doing in the world today, but I can't handle really scary adventure novels. I am more interested in people and animals than in rocks and plants. I tutor reading and writing and prefer second graders. I live with my husband Bill and cat Sasha in the center of California.
