    About this series

    This book includes a selection of oral and poster presentations from "Onshore-Offshore Relationships on the Nordic Margin Conference" held in Trondheim in 2002. The conference was jointly arranged by the Norwegian Geological Society (NGF) and the Norwegian Petroleum Society (NPF), and attempted, through different thematic sessions, to bridge the gap often noted between industry and academic research.



    The first part of the conference included presentations under the theme "Basement control on offshore structuring" with representative articles from that segment included in this book and covering topics that range from analysis of vertical movements of basement substrates to the deep structural architecture of the Norwegian Sea to the development of the Jan Mayen microcontinent. These papers set the scene for the second segment of the conference, "Linking uplift and erosion with subsidence and deposition", that in the present book include articles related to the Triassic to Present-day infill history in the Norwegian and northern North Seas. The last segment of the conference addressed "New challenges" with respect to natural features of the deep-water areas that necessitate particular consideration and innovation on the part of research and industry to mitigate risk and maximize returns from field development.



    In this book, the articles addressing this theme present analyses of the enormous submarine slides that took place during the Holocene in the Norwegian Sea, and are of particular interest to the developers of the Ormen Lange gas field; other articles address the occurrences of gas hydrates in the near sea floor and the challenges presented in identifying and protecting the Lophelia cold-water reefs in the region.

      This conference was arranged by the Norwegian Petroleum Society in order to commemorate the first 25 years of exploration on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Sixty papers and posters were presented of which 25 have been selected for this volume. Since the start of exploration activities during the mid 1960's the North Sea has not only proved to be one of the main petroleum provinces in the world, but has also established itself as an excellent laboratory for geoscientific research and application. This development has been stimulated greatly by the openess towards exchange of technical data encouragement by the Norwegian authorities. The objective of this book is to assess the results of 25 years of exploration in Norway. It focuses on lessons learned from past experiences as well as considering future challenges facing geoscientists in the industry (relating to both exploration and exploitation activities). Included, are papers which assess the status and future trends of exploration in the main geological provinces on the Norwegian Continental Shelf from the Central Graben in the south to Svalbard and the Russian Artic in the north.

      Sequence Stratigraphy, presently one of the most rapidly growing areas in geology, is concerned with the documentation and prediction of how sandstones (potential hydrocarbon reservoirs) and shales (potential source rocks) are distributed in time and space within sedimentary basins. The book takes a critical look at some of the sequence stratigraphy concepts, and provides an account of how these have been applied recently in NW Europe (North Sea, mid Norway and E. Greenland, Barents Sea and Svalbard), mainly in connection with the exploration for oil and gas. There is currently no similar book available.

      This volume contains 17 selected papers reflecting the flavour of the Norwegian Petroleum Society conference on hydrocarbon seals quantification and showing the recent significant advances in the understanding and application of hydrocarbon seal methodologies. Three broad categories are covered in this book: methodologies addressing cap-rock integrity, methodologies relating to fault seal and case studies both from the hydrocarbon basins of Northwestern Europe and in the form of outcrop examples. With the North Sea, Norwegian Sea and Atlantic Margin moving along their respective basin maturity and development curves, exploration is being forced deeper into high pressure/high temperature terrains, while exploitation and development requires greater precision and realism in reservoir simulations to maximise drilling strategies to prolong field life. In all instances the need for predictive tools and methodologies that address the integrity and behaviour of top and lateral (fault) seals to hydrocarbon traps, both in the static and dynamic state, have been identified as key risk factors and this is reflected in this volume.
