About this series

The people of Gbahn face attack from the ships of the Archipelago. But the greatest danger may be from their own clerics and magic workers. Plagued by drought, dissent, and war, they have unknowingly released a force more powerful than they imagined. Their only hope might be the invaders and refugees who have encroached on their land, and a secret that has been hidden deep in the desert for centuries.

Orwyn may be the only one who can fight these dangerous powers, but the traumas he has endured have trapped him in a struggle of his own, and his only help in a hostile foreign land is a wounded and reluctant Loriene. Far away in the islands, Demmina also learns what happens when magic is violently misused, but she is unprepared for how it changes her.

As Tomas sails into battle, more tormented by his unstable mind than ever, he brings his long-betrothed bride, Bronwin. The voyage is long, taking Tomas and Bronwin into virtually uncharted regions, and sweeping Bronwin into a world of blackmail, sickness, and mutiny. But when they finally land in Gbahn, the forces they encounter there might be unconquerable.

The island nations of the Archipelago build warships with scarce wood and forbid the use of magic as cheating. But when a threat comes from the south and the desert land of Gbahn, they must unite forces - and people from very different worlds will be brought together to face secret struggles as terrible as any battle. Demmina unwillingly finds herself at the center of the Archipelago's wars, both public and secret, although she only wants to find out what happened to her exiled cousin Loriene. But she will be drawn ever deeper into the intrigue by Orwyn, a young magician with dark motives of his own and the power to tear the world apart. Tomas has no fear of magicians, and as the only officer on his ship who does not, his leadership is invaluable in the coming war. But he may not be strong enough to lead. His heart is swept away by a hopeless infatuation with Loriene, even as his mind is tormented by waves of passion and misery that could finally overcome him. And Loriene carries the burden of a terrible legacy, even as she becomes the only one who can help Orwyn as they move closer to war with Gbahn.

Author

Michelle M Welch

Michelle M. Welch wrote her first book at the age of 9 - a handwritten stack of paper bound with string and shelved in her elementary school library. A lifelong fan of fantasy, science fiction, and magical realism, she had her first short story published in a small press anthology in 1995. Her fantasy trilogy The Five Countries was published by Bantam Spectra, starting with Confidence Game in 2003. The Gbahn and Archipelago novels are a departure into independent publishing. When not writing, she works as a librarian and dabbles in music and other arts. She was creator and editor of the podcast anthology Theme and Variations, featuring short speculative fiction with music as a theme. She lives in the Phoenix, Arizona area with two cats, one husband, and too many musical instruments.
