Description

What’s a non-ska band that has been incredibly influential to an entire generation of ska bands? The answer is simple: Mr. Bungle. So today, we dig into Mr. Bungle’s roots, relationship to ska and their unique approach with genre by chatting with their bassist Trevor Dunn. On this episode, we focus on the time period when the group released several DIY tapes in the 80s, got signed to Warner Brothers and then released one hell of a major label debut record in 1991. Trevor tells us about the band’s love for Fishbone, Bad Manners and Oingo Boingo. He even mentions a time when Mr. Bungle played with The Untouchables. We dig into their cassette releases: The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny, Bowel of Chiley, and Goddammit I Love America!!!$ɫ!!. We also talk a bit about their song “Carousel,” which isn’t their first ska song but might very well be the first ska song they wrote from a sincere place. We also talk about Mike Patton’s friendship with Danny Devito, growing up in Humbolt County, listening to televangelist Robert Tilton for hours on end, their love of masks and the role that Deli Creeps era Buckethead played on them, and how they tried to work with Frank Zappa and Thomas Dolby, but instead landed John Zorn, who it turns out was perfect for their particular brand of unsettling art. Plus, we get the deets on the infamous 1992 New Year's Eve show with Primus where Mike Patton drinks his own piss from a shoe. Fun times! Listen to Trevor Dunn tell these stories and more in this episode of In Defense of Ska, and make sure to like, review, and follow the series wherever you get your podcast.Fans can also get early and ad-free episodes by joining the IDOS Patreon, and don't forget to check out all the Consequence Podcast Network series here.
