Description

In a startling development, three girls, aged 12 and 13, have been charged with second-degree murder following the death of a 64-year-old disabled man in Washington, D.C. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) announced the arrests, shedding light on the harrowing events of October 17, 2023.

During court proceedings, judges dismissed a first-degree murder charge against the girls, citing a lack of conclusive evidence. Despite this setback, the gravity of the charges underscores the severity of the incident and its impact on the community.

"Horrific" video footage presented during the hearings provided a glimpse into the brutal assault on Reggie Brown. According to reports, the one-minute clip captured the girls chasing Brown into an alley, where they subjected him to a vicious attack.

"He's leaking," one of the girls cheered in the video, referring to Brown's head bleeding, as reported by The Washington Post. The disturbing nature of the assault left investigators and court officials deeply troubled by its senseless violence.

During his testimony, homicide detective Harry Singleton painted a grim picture of Brown's vulnerabilities, highlighting his disabilities and mental health struggles. Singleton's account underscored the tragic circumstances surrounding Brown's death and the need for accountability.

In a poignant statement to NBC Washington, Brown's niece expressed profound grief over her uncle's untimely demise. "My uncle really didn’t deserve this," she lamented. "He was known in this community for years, so for this to happen where he lived for 64 [years] is insane."

Despite the gravity of the charges, the three girls, whose identities remain undisclosed due to their juvenile status, have pleaded not guilty. They are currently held in custody at the D.C. Youth Services Center as legal proceedings continue.

As the case unfolds, the community grapples with shock and sorrow over the tragic loss of Brown's life, renewing calls for measures to address youth violence and ensure justice for the victim and his family.
