Description

Massachusetts State Police have initiated an internal investigation into Trooper Michael Proctor, the lead investigator in the Karen Read murder case, as confirmed by a spokesperson on Wednesday night.

The investigation comes amidst the ongoing legal proceedings against Karen Read, who stands accused of second-degree murder in connection with the death of her boyfriend, Boston police Officer John O'Keefe. O'Keefe was discovered dead outside a Canton home belonging to the Albert family in January 2022.

During a recent pretrial hearing, Read's defense team raised concerns about potential misconduct within the investigation. Defense attorney Alan Jackson alleged that Proctor had undisclosed relationships with key witnesses, including members of the Albert family.

Jackson presented evidence, including text messages, suggesting a personal connection between Proctor and the Alberts. In response, Assistant District Attorney Adam Lally stated that while there was contact, the alleged babysitting arrangement never materialized.

However, these allegations were refuted by Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrissey in an August 2023 public statement. Morrissey denied claims that Proctor had any motive or opportunity to tamper with evidence, emphasizing that Proctor had no personal relationship with parties involved in the case.

Despite the ongoing investigation, Proctor will remain on full duty. The nature of the alleged violation remains undisclosed, and it is unclear whether it is directly related to Read's case.

In light of recent developments, Read's defense team filed a motion requesting information from the State Police Internal Affairs Unit, although the specifics of their request have not been made public.

Furthermore, supporters of Karen Read are planning a protest outside the Norfolk County District Attorney's Office in Canton on Thursday afternoon.

The State Police's internal investigation raises questions about the integrity of the Karen Read case, casting further doubt on the prosecution's claims and emphasizing the need for transparency in legal proceedings.

As developments unfold, the Massachusetts State Police and Norfolk County District Attorney's Office face increasing scrutiny over their handling of this high-profile murder case.

This news comes amidst a backdrop of heightened tensions and public interest surrounding the case, with stakeholders eagerly awaiting further updates on its progress.
