When 9th grader Phillip Chism doesn't arrive home from school, his mother calls police to report him missing. As the town begins to look for the 14-year-old, word spreads around town that 24-year-old teacher, Colleen Ritzer,  is also missing. Chism is found walking down the road just after midnight and after a quick search of his backpack he is arrested. Later that morning the body of Colleen Ritzer is found on school grounds, sexually positioned with a folded note next to her body that said "I hate you all".
