How the Portland Trail Blazers can finish Top 5 in the West: The Portland Trail Blazers want to be a competitive playoff team this season. But getting there is going to be a challenge. Luckily, one brave podcast has plotted the course for the Blazers to become a top 5 team in a crowded Western Conference. It starts with Damian Lillard playing like Damian Lillard. Then throw in the continued rise of Anfernee Simons and the Blazers have the quick makings of one of the best offenses in the NBA. But the question is on the other side of the court. If the Blazers are going to be a top playoff team they have to be a top 10 defense in the NBA. It's non-negotiable. If they don't check that box, they're likely in the play-in or worse. Finally, Jusuf Nurkic has to be available for 70 or more games and the Blazers commitment to small ball has to work out. This Team is FUN!: Damian Lillard had 41 points in back to back games over the weekend and the Portland Trail Blazers improved to 3-0 with wins over the Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings. Dame was sensational quieting any lingering concerns about what level of player he would be this season. Both games came down to the wire and ended with game winning buckets by players that weren't Damian Lillard. Anfernee Simons downed the Suns with a righty runner and Jerami Grant sunk the Lakers with a driving finish in traffic. It's an important element to the beginning of the season as the team builds trust for everyone, not just Lillard, to have big moments in crunch time. The third segment looks at what we've learned from the first three games. The defense looks much improved and passes the early eye test and the offense is a work in progress but the ideas behind what they're trying to do on that end make sense. Trail Blazers losing streak runs to 7 + Western Conference Tiers: The Trail Blazers losing streak is still alive and kicking after a 113-103 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday night. Portland led by as much 10 in the third quarter before the wheels absolutely came off and the whole dang thing got derailed. Memphis ripped off a 26-4 run from the end of the third quarter into the fourth that put the game away and sent the Blazers to their tenth loss in the last 11 games. Damian Lillard hit five three-pointers, but the Blazers were outscored by a ludicrous 23 points in the 10 minutes their point guard was on the bench. Not a great recipe for success!
