Locked on Jets 3/14/19 Episode 590: A Quiet New Year: Yesterday was the NFL's version of New Year's Day. The league year began at 4:00 p.m. New York time. The official start of the league year has become largely meaningless. Perhaps there still is significance since players cannot officially sign contracts with new teams until it comes (Anthony Barr), but the days of coaches and general managers sitting in a car outside a free agent's house waiting for midnight are over. Players can now negotiate during the legal tampering period, and most of the big names come off the board during that time period. After the Le'Veon Bell excitement, Wednesday was a slow day for the Jets. They actually lost two of their three Pro Bowlers from a year ago, but the impact is far less than it sounds. The two players they lost were special teamers, Jason Myers and Andre Roberts. The team did retain backup linebacker and special teamer Neville Hewitt. Locked on Jets 2/6/19 Episode 565: Decision Time: The offseason has officially begun. The Jets made their first major move on Tuesday as they parted ways with center Spencer Long. Long lasted only one season in the green and white. The Jets signed him in hopes he could stabilize the middle of the offensive line. Unfortunately, he did anything but that. The Jets had to make a decision shortly after the Super Bowl since Long's contract stated that he would be guaranteed $3 million if still on the roster today. It wasn't a very difficult decision to make given his low quality of play last season. The Jets have a few more decisions to make about players under contract. Those decisions will be the focus of today's podcast. In truth, the Jets have less to decide than most teams in the league because they have so few players under contract, but they will have to make a call on a number of important roster pieces. The period of "legal tampering" begins today when teams and players are allowed to start discussing contracts. With the cap space the Jets will have, you can expect plenty of activity. But in many ways the new year began for the Jets over the weekend when news broke that the Jets acquired former Pro Bowl guard Kelechi Osemele. The Jets sent a fifth round pick to the Raiders and received a sixth round pick back to facilitate the deal. The team has a clear need to upgrade its offensive line, and this was the first step. Considering that is the case, Monday was a pretty busy day for the Jets as they started the "legal tampering" period by agreeing to terms with four players. A preliminary report suggests quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates is likely to replace Morton in 2018. This is the third time Todd Bowles has changed a coordinator. Two offensive coordinators have been let go in his tenure, Chan Gailey and Morton, along with one special teams coordinator, Bobby April. The one coordinator who has stayed through the entire Bowles tenure is Kacy Rodgers. Rodgers has helped Bowles run his defense to the chagrin of many fans.
