Whether the Jets keep the third pick or trade down, the team's eventual pick will likely be viewed as either filling a need or the best player available (ideally both). This is how these picks tend to be evaluated. For a long time I have felt like this thinking was too simplistic. I think there are considerations that go beyond these two concepts. In addition, I think there are complex elements that go into what constitutes the best player available and a team's most pressing need. Are we talking about the best player today, or the guy who will grow into the best player eventually? Are we talking about the position that is a need because it has the lowest quality players, or a cornerstone position lacking impact talent? Jets Draft Likes, Dislikes, and Thoughts Episode 856 4/28/20: We now have the full 2020 NFL Draft class for the Jets. On yesterday's podcast I went through pick by pick and offered thoughts on each player the Jets added. On today's show I give thoughts on the big picture. What did I like? What didn't I like? What did I notice? I think any discussion of likes has to start with the offensive line. After years of ignoring the trenches in the early stages of the Draft, the Jets used the eleventh pick and another top 130 pick on offensive line prospects. They also added additional picks during the value stages of the Draft. These were among my likes. What about dislikes? The addition of Denzel Mims feels like a great value, but only adding one receiver in a deep class at the position feels like a missed opportunity. What is a general thought? The Jets clearly valued measurables in this Draft. Whether that will ultimately prove to be a successful approach is unclear. Training Camp Preview Running Backs, The Browns Have The Leagues Best: We continue the training camp preview series as we focus on the running back room. The Browns have the NFL's best running back but after that there's legit questions. Nick Chubb has become a franchise staple but this year we should see a different version of him. With the team shifting to more shotgun sets that will change the run game but Nick will adjust. We should see Chubb contribute more as a receiver which should save him some hits as the Browns will need him in January. Jerome Ford seems to have all the potential but there's no proof he can handle running back two touches.
